Baselayer and Nevermined bring identity and payments together for agentic commerce
Baselayer’s business identity and risk intelligence is now available through Nevermined, bringing trust to both sides of agentic transactions.
Agents are quickly moving from researching and recommending to taking action. To do that autonomously, they need more than access to information: they need permission to acquire the tools and services a task requires, and the businesses they transact with need to know who is on the other side.
That is why Baselayer is partnering with Nevermined to bring payments and identity closer together.
Together, Nevermined gives agents bounded authority to spend and Baselayer provides the verified business context required to transact with confidence.
From pre-provisioned access to on-demand capabilities
Today, agents are constrained by the tools preconfigured for them by a human user. This limits the utility of agents in dynamic workflows, where they do not always know in advance what a task will require.
Agent builders are faced with two undesirable options:
- Approve every tool call and purchase, limiting agent autonomy and efficiency gains;
- Grant an agent access to every credential it could possibly need, creating a significant blast radius and scope for runaway spend.
Nevermined lets an enterprise authorize the agent differently: give it a budget and a boundary.
A person determines the spending limit and duration before the work begins. The agent can then purchase Baselayer APIs when needed, without being given an unrestricted card number or waiting for somebody to manually top-up an account. Because the underlying payment instrument is a card, the spend remains within familiar enterprise payment and reporting infrastructure.
This delegated authority reflects the way enterprises operate with employees today, and is a much better operating model for autonomous work than asking a human to anticipate every service, credential, and unit of consumption in advance.
This opens up new workflows for:
- Onboarding and compliance agents that need to verify businesses as they enter a queue.
- Procurement and research agents that need verified corporate, ownership, and risk information before recommending a supplier.
- Fraud and underwriting agents that need to deepen an investigation dynamically as new evidence appears.
- Commerce agents that need to purchase trusted services while operating inside enterprise defined spending limits.
Building trust on both sides of the transaction
Giving an agent the ability to make a payment is an important milestone. It is not enough, on its own, to create an economy. Commerce depends on trust as well as money.
Buyers need bounded authority; sellers need to know who they are dealing with; platforms need confidence in the participants they allow onto their networks; and enterprises need an audit trail they can defend after an autonomous transaction takes place.
The first phase of the Baselayer and Nevermined partnership makes trusted business intelligence something an agent can acquire autonomously. The next phases bring identity and payments closer together: verifying the sellers an agent can buy from, associating spending authority with registered agents, and ultimately establishing the identity behind the agents themselves.
Baselayer will bring Nevermined’s card delegation experience into Baselayer’s Trusted Registry, connecting agent identity with the authority to transact. Nevermined is using Baselayer to verify sellers in its marketplace, helping agents and their operators establish who they are buying from.
That same infrastructure extends into Know Your Agent, giving merchants and platforms a way to establish the agent participating in a transaction and the business or person it represents.
Agentic commerce requires more than giving an agent the ability to pay. Agents need bounded authority to transact, and the ecosystem needs confidence in who is on either side of the transaction. Nevermined is building the delegation and payments layer while Baselayer establishes identity and trust.
